O Francisco

Hi, I’m Francisco!

I’m a pianist by training and a chess enthusiast by passion. Chess has been part of my life for many years, and my relationship with the game started early on. In the early 2000s, I spent countless hours on my old Windows XP computer working through the academy lessons and exercises of Chessmaster 7000. Going through that material in a structured and progressive way gave me a solid foundation and, most importantly, taught me how to enjoy the game with understanding rather than just intuition.

From there, my interest naturally went deeper. I’ve always been curious about how things actually work, and that curiosity pushed me to explore the inner mechanics of chess: why certain ideas repeat, how positions are built, and how decision-making really functions over the board. Over time, chess became not just a game I played, but a discipline I studied.

This way of thinking comes directly from my background in classical piano. Progress in music depends on analysing detail, isolating difficulties, and building solid structures step by step. I’ve been teaching piano for over 15 years to students of all ages, backgrounds, and levels, which gave me extensive experience in understanding how humans learn complex skills and where they usually get stuck. I apply exactly the same mindset to chess: when positions, plans, and decisions are broken down into their core elements, everything becomes clearer and more manageable.

Along the way, I’ve seen this same learning process repeated while studying foreign languages such as English, French, Korean, and currently Croatian. These experiences helped me connect many ideas about learning across disciplines and allowed me to discover practical principles that I actively apply in my lessons today.

I enjoy teaching because I like helping students see patterns, gain confidence, and understand why things work on the board, not just which moves to play. My approach is structured but relaxed — serious about improvement, practical in execution, and always adapted to the individual student.

If you’re looking for a coach who values clarity, structure, and enjoyment in the learning process, I’ll be happy to help you on your chess journey.

About the lesson

My chess lessons are built around a structured, disciplined, and deeply human approach to learning, inspired by my background as a classical pianist and piano teacher. For many years, I studied and taught classical piano at a high level, working daily with complex repertoire that requires precision, patience, and a clear long-term vision. That same mindset is what I bring into chess teaching.

Rather than relying on memorization or quick tricks, I focus on building strong foundations and core skills: understanding positions, recognizing patterns, improving calculation, and developing good thinking habits at the board. My goal is not just to help you play better moves, but to help you think better while playing.

Teaching methods and techniques

* Step-by-step progression, adapted to your level
* Clear explanations focused on why things work, not only what to play
* Work on core skills: calculation, positional understanding, planning, and evaluation
* Practical exercises taken from real games, including your own games whenever possible
* Strong emphasis on discipline, consistency, and long-term improvement

Typical lesson flow

A lesson usually starts with a short warm-up or review, followed by focused work on a specific topic, for example attacking principles, endgame ideas, or improving piece coordination. We then apply these ideas through positions or game fragments, and finish with clear takeaways and suggestions for practice between lessons.

What makes my teaching different

What truly sets my lessons apart is the cross-disciplinary perspective. In classical piano, mastering the instrument requires breaking down extremely complex tasks into manageable elements, refining them patiently over years, and developing both technique and musical understanding. I apply the same proven learning principles to chess.

Who these lessons are for

My lessons are especially suited for:

* Beginners and lower-intermediate players who want to build real understanding
* Adult learners who value structure and clarity
* Players who feel stuck and want a more systematic way to improve
* Students who enjoy learning how to learn, not just collecting openings

A note on transparency

I believe in being open and honest with my students. My current official chess rating is still developing, mainly because for many years I did not play many rated tournaments. Chess was a serious passion pursued alongside my musical career rather than a competitive focus.

What is central to my chess development, however, is that I trained intensively for a full year with a FIDE Master, following a structured and demanding training programme. This experience fundamentally shaped how I understand chess: how to calculate correctly, evaluate positions, build plans, and make practical decisions at the board. It also strongly influences the way I teach, organise material, and guide students through a clear learning path.

I have competed successfully against significantly higher-rated players, including 1900+ ELO, but more importantly, my real strength lies in analysis, explanation, and structured improvement.

Beyond chess, my deep understanding of what it takes to master a complex discipline comes from classical piano, where I studied for many years with a rigorous, step-by-step method, mastered some of the most demanding works in the repertoire, and developed a solid, reliable technique. That long-term training experience is at the core of my teaching philosophy.

If you are looking for a thoughtful, structured, and supportive learning environment guided by someone who understands both chess and the process of long-term mastery, I will be happy to work with you.
